Originally opened as an upscale dinner club in 1957, the Continental Club has changed with the times, the glow of its distinctive neon sign illuminating its place as an Austin institution. From its beginning as a jazz club to the burlesque shows in the 1960s and into the explosive era of Austin music in the 1970s, the Continental remained at the forefront of live music. Joe Ely, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Cobras, and Kinky Friedman all helped make the Continental the place to be, and Will and Charlie Sexton both cut their musical teeth there. In 1987, the club was retrofitted, and its original ‘50’s glamour restored. Home to Toni Price’s legendary Hippy Hour, as well as annual birthday shows honoring Buck Owens, Elvis, Loretta Lynn, and Hank Williams, the Continental continues to showcase the best roots, rockabilly, country and swing.
