Chock full of memorabilia, Threadgill’s is a portal to the past, a celebration of Austin over the last seventy years. Kenneth Threadgill, a musician himself, opened a gas station and beer joint in 1933. He would entertain there, and by the 1960s, it was a popular place for folk and country musicians, including a young University of Texas student named Janis Joplin. Threadgill closed the place in 1974, but Eddie Wilson, who had opened the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters, revived it. The second location is called Threadgill’s World Headquarters in homage to the Armadillo, considered by many to be ground zero for the country-rock explosion of the 1970s. Justly famous for their chicken fried steak and garlic cheese grits, both locations still feature live music regularly, including a gospel brunch on Sundays and “String Band Thursdays.
