The Victory Grill first opened in 1945 as a restaurant and bar for soldiers returning from the war. In this post World War II era, Austin was racially segregated, with the East Side neighborhoods being primarily African American, and this hamburger and beer joint was a welcome addition to the local scene. Long before Antone’s brought the blues to downtown Austin, legends such as Bobby "Blue" Bland, B.B. King, and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown all played the Victory Grill. Over the years it closed and re-opened a few times, but, in 1996, it was renovated and reclaimed its place as the East Side’s hippest place to hear the blues.
