Once winner of the Austin Chronicle’s "Best New Approach to a Mexican-American Cultural Center" award, Jovita’s is a live music venue, a restaurant, and a community gathering place that welcomes visitors from all over the world. A mural outside proclaims it to be “Territorio Libre” or “free territory,” and inside the murals depict Aztec art and revolutionary heroes. The eclectic clientele are certainly free to speak their mind, and to dress how they please (the first Thursday of the month is “tiara night”) while enjoying a mix of musical styles on the jukebox and on the patio stage. Don Walser was a regular there for years, and Flaco Jimenez is a frequent attraction. For a true South Austin experience, enjoy the Cornell Hurd Band, who have played there every Thursday since 1996, over great margaritas and enchiladas.
